Azure Account Options and Terms
- Account Types:
- Azure Free Account: Designed for proof of concept and exploration. Includes a $200 credit (valid for 30 days) and access to specific free services.
- Pay-As-You-Go: Designed for production workloads; users are billed only for usage exceeding monthly free amounts.
- Free Account Benefits:
- $200 credit to explore services for up to 30 days.
- Access to "always free" services and services free for the first 12 months.
- No charges unless the user explicitly upgrades to Pay-As-You-Go.
- Transitioning:
- Users must upgrade to Pay-As-You-Go within 30 days or upon credit exhaustion to continue using services.
- If a user does not upgrade, the account and services will be disabled.
- Remaining credit is retained for the full 30-day period even if the user upgrades early.
- Verification Requirements:
- Requires a phone number, a non-prepaid credit/debit card, and a Microsoft or GitHub account.
- A temporary $1 (or equivalent) authorization hold is placed on the card for identity verification and then removed.
- Important Restrictions:
- Limit of one free account per new customer.
- Free account credit cannot be used for Azure Marketplace purchases.
- Azure Hybrid Benefit cannot be combined with the free account credit.
- Free account offers are not available for sovereign cloud products (US Government, Azure China, Azure Germany).
- Management:
- Usage and remaining credit can be monitored via the Azure portal under Microsoft Cost Management.
