NCBI Updates and Announcements

  • 2024 NIH Public Access Policy: The NCBI has updated the NIH Manuscript Submission (NIHMS) system to better support NIH-funded researchers and institutions with policy compliance.
  • Retirement of rsync Protocol: NCBI will officially discontinue support for the rsync protocol on June 1, 2026, to improve security and efficiency.
    • Temporary "brownout" periods will occur prior to this date where rsync access will be intentionally disabled to help users transition.
    • After June 1, 2026, all attempts to connect to ftp.ncbi.nlm.gov using rsync will fail.
  • GenBank Release 271.0: Released on April 14, 2026, this update contains 53.90 trillion bases and 6.27 billion records.
    • Traditional records: 261,460,182 records (7.29 trillion base pairs).
    • WGS records: 4,756,526,485 records (45.63 trillion base pairs).
    • TSA records: 1,058,643,373 records (898.65 billion base pairs).
