Introduction

Phylotastic: Accessing the Tree of Life

  • Project Goal: To provide convenient, computable, and credible access to expert phylogenetic knowledge (the "Tree of Life") in ready-to-use formats.
  • Origins: Developed through community hackathons at NESCent and an NSF-funded collaboration between the University of Maryland, New Mexico State University, and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
  • Key Resources & Products:
    • PhylotasticEd: Educational resources for teaching the Tree of Life and evolutionary history.
    • History of Earth: Integrates species phylogeny with plate tectonics and resources for charismatic organisms.
    • Datelife: Provides reusable and citable chronograms.
    • Phylotastic R-universe: A repository of R packages for phylogenetics, built on rOpenSci to enhance reproducibility and support both current and legacy software.
  • Open Source Commitment: The project maintains an open-source philosophy, with all code accessible via their repository.
  • Legacy/Offline Components: The project maintains historical documentation from past hackathons (Wiki) and previously hosted a visual portal for tree retrieval (currently offline).
