Teens, Social Media, and Technology 2023: Key Findings

  • Survey Methodology: Conducted by Pew Research Center from Sept. 26 to Oct. 23, 2023, among 1,453 U.S. teens (ages 13–17).
  • Platform Dominance:
    • YouTube: The most widely used platform, with 9-in-10 teens reporting use.
    • TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram: Majorities of teens (59%–63%) use these platforms.
    • Facebook Decline: Usage has plummeted from 71% in 2014–2015 to 33% today.
    • BeReal: 13% of teens report using this app.
  • Frequency of Use:
    • Nearly half of all teens report being online "almost constantly."
    • A third of teens use at least one major platform (YouTube, TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, or Facebook) "almost constantly."
    • Daily usage is highest for YouTube (70%) and TikTok (58%).
  • Demographic Trends:
    • Gender: Girls are more likely to use TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram; boys are more likely to use Discord, Twitch, Reddit, and YouTube.
    • Race/Ethnicity: Black and Hispanic teens report higher rates of "almost constant" internet and platform usage compared to White teens.
    • Age: Older teens (15–17) are more likely to use most platforms and report higher rates of constant internet usage than younger teens (13–14).
    • Income: Teens in lower-income households are more likely to use Facebook and TikTok, but have significantly less access to home computers and tablets than those in higher-income households.
  • Device Access:
    • Smartphone: 95% of teens have access.
    • Computer: 90% of teens have access.
    • Gaming Console: 83% of teens have access (higher among boys at 91%).
    • Tablet: 65% of teens have access.
  • Stability: Overall social media usage patterns have remained relatively stable since the Center's previous survey in spring 2022.
